Running Pain

9 Dec

I’ve mentioned before, I am not a runner. Despite that fact, I volunteered to be a Running Buddy for the New Balance Girls On the Run 5k this Sunday!! As a running buddy I have to encourage one or two 8-10 year old girls to finish the 5k they have been training for, the past few months.  I’m very excited to do this and am sure the girls will do great!

I do have a concern…remember that part earlier, you know, the part where I am not a runner…well yeah..I fear that I may be the one who will need the encouragement assistance to get across the finish. I have been “training” using the C25K on and off.  Recently I’ve just been doing ma own thang and running in our community.  Last night the Hubs and I ran a 5k in our hood, it felt good to complete so I know I can do it.  I felt good, my breathing was paced, my legs didn’t hurt like they had in previous runs, but then there was my lower back, it hurt so much that I had to run/walk.  I’d only run until I felt the pain/tightness getting worse.  I definitely didn’t push myself or try to push through the pain because I know that can only make it worse.

I’m not sure what to blame the pain one, is it my shoes, is it my posture, do I not know how to run?  I do know that I’m trying to be real careful leading up to Sunday because the last thing I want is to not be able to fulfill my commitment with Girls On the Run. So I made today a rest day because my lower back is kind of sore.  I will maybe do 2 miles tomorrow and rest Saturday so I’m rested and energized for Sunday.

Anyone out there have ideas/suggestions for a non-runner?  Have any of you experienced this lower back pain?

8 to 10 year olds? Running a 5k? AWESOME!!!! I wish my parents got me into such a great healthy habbit/hobby at a young age. If we ever have kids, I wanna start the healthy habits young.

It really is a great thing to do Mindy! My dd is still too young to join the group but next school year she will be joining and she can’t wait

Hmm, back pain from running. Could very well be how you are running and your posture. Could also be a weakness in the core area (abs, hips, glutes, low back). Do you do any strengthening for your core? Do you stretch and warm up before a run?

I agree with you, I think it had to do with my posture. I ran the 5k this weekend with NO pain 🙂 I made sure to pay attention to posture. I do warm up before as well as core work.
